The Oxford Cavaliers were the University of Oxford’s original American football team, founded in 1991. Between 1995-2010 they were a dominant joint team with Oxford Brookes University, even winning a National Championship in the 2001-02 season.
However, new league regulations in 2010 led to the team being split into the Oxford Lancers and the Oxford Brookes Panthers. Since this separation, a Cavalier Cup game (named in honour of the joint team) is played annually between the Lancers and Panthers. The two teams now play in the same division, BUCS Southern Tier 2, meaning the match has very real consequences for their respective seasons.
This year, the Oxford Lancers stand at 4-0 coming into this match, while the Oxford Brookes Panthers are at 4-0-1; the Cavalier Cup will decide who has the best chance of winning the division. The Lancers look to stay undefeated, promotion and playoffs within sight.
